Abortion Pill

A medical/chemical abortion procedure uses two drugs to terminate a pregnancy. The first medication ends the pregnancy by blocking the hormone progesterone. This causes the fetal heart to stop and the pregnancy to detach from the uterine lining.

Unexpected

Pregnancy?

Abortion is a serious medical decision. Maybe you never imagined you would be facing a decision like this. All the complicated emotions you’re feeling right now are valid. Educating yourself and having all your questions answered is an important step.

Knowledge is empowering and allows you to make an informed decision about your unplanned pregnancy confidently.

The following information will be helpful if you’re considering abortion.

FAQs

Am I Really Pregnant?

You don’t have to figure out the answer to this question on your own or face the possibility of an unexpected pregnancy alone. Corbella Clinic is here for you. If you’ve already taken an at-home pregnancy test,  you may be looking at the result with disbelief. It’s common to have doubts about the accuracy of the test result and feel uncertain about where to turn next. Start by taking one step at a time. And we can help.

Corbella Clinic is your first step. Here, you will receive accurate answers from caring medical professionals who will empower you with correct facts to make informed decisions about your pregnancy. That fact-gathering begins with scheduling an appointment with one of our experienced registered nurses at Corbella Clinic for confidential urine pregnancy testing.

If an ultrasound is included, you can anticipate being at our clinic for about 60-90 minutes for your first appointment.

You will need to bring a current photo ID with you to your appointment. You will not need to bring any insurance information or payment because you won’t be charged for our services.

Yes, we encourage you to bring a trusted support person to your appointment who can stay with you during portions of your visit.

If you have children, please arrange childcare for them as children are not allowed in the clinic.

When you visit our clinic for your scheduled appointment, you can expect to be greeted warmly before meeting with one of our professional registered nurses. You can also expect your appointment to be completely confidential, with all services provided to you at no cost.

Services provided at your appointment may include:

  • Medical-grade, urine pregnancy testing
  • Limited obstetrical ultrasound
  • Education, including exploring your pregnancy options
  • STI/STD Testing

An ultrasound is essential because it provides valuable information about your pregnancy. If you are considering abortion, you need the answers to the following three questions, and only an ultrasound can give you those answers.

  1. Is the pregnancy in the uterus (and not ectopic)?
  2. Is your pregnancy viable/living?
  3. How far along is your pregnancy?

All of our services are at no cost to you.

Our priority is that you receive the skilled medical care and support you need when you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy.

No, we are not required to tell your parents you visited our clinic. You can receive all our services, which will remain completely confidential even if you’re under 18.

Yes, you can be pregnant and have an STI/STD at the same time. Having an untreated STI/STD while pregnant can cause serious harm to you and your pregnancy.

It’s vital that you are tested in early pregnancy whether you plan to continue your pregnancy or not. We can help.

Yes, Corbella Clinic is a medical clinic with licensed registered nurses and a licensed medical director. You will be compassionately cared for by our medical professionals, who undergo extensive training and continuing education to provide you with high-quality, skilled pregnancy medical care.

Abortion Pill In-Depth

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the abortion pill through 70 days (10 weeks) of pregnancy. A medical/chemical abortion procedure uses two drugs to terminate a pregnancy. The first medication ends the pregnancy by blocking the hormone progesterone. This causes the fetal heart to stop and the pregnancy to detach from the uterine lining. Up to 48 hours later, the second medication is taken, which causes strong uterine cramping to expel the embryo/fetus and pregnancy tissue.

Before Taking The Abortion Pill

We recommend scheduling a pregnancy screening and ultrasound appointment for your health and safety.

A pregnancy screening appointment is critical because it reduces risk to your health and equips you with information unique to you and your pregnancy so you can make a fully informed decision.

A pregnancy screening appointment includes time with our licensed medical staff, a medical-grade pregnancy test, a limited obstetrical ultrasound, and STI/STD testing. The four essential purposes for this appointment are:

  1. Confirming that you have a viable pregnancy.
  2. Determining gestational age and available options.
  3. Testing to be sure you don’t have an STI (sexually transmitted infection).
  4. Supporting you and answering all of your questions.

To protect your emotional, psychological, and physical health, before proceeding with an abortion it is important to have all the information mentioned above.

Side Effects and Risks

The most common side effects of a surgical abortion include:

  • Bleeding and passing blood clots
  • Intense cramping
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Feeling faint/sweating

Complications of a surgical abortion include:

  • Severe infection
  • Damage to the cervix or uterus
  • Excessive bleeding

Unplanned Pregnancy Options

If you are considering abortion, there are a few abortion types available, including surgical abortions and medication (or the abortion pill). The cost of an abortion and the availability of each will depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Our team will help you to understand the facts about your abortion options, abortion side effects, and abortion risks.

While Corbella Clinic does not perform or refer women for elective abortions, we are here to provide the judgment-free care you need so you can make the best decision possible for you. We do offer a free pre-abortion screening for women who are considering this option.

If you want to continue with the pregnancy, but don’t feel ready to be a parent, there are several paths to consider through adoption. We will walk you through these options and help you understand what is involved and what to expect. We can also help to connect you with a reputable adoption agency to help you through the process.
Although parenting may not have been your plan at this time in your life, it is possible, and many women choose this route. Whether single or with the help of a partner, friends, or family, we’re here to support in many ways with resources, classes, and services to help you be successful. This is a big decision, but you’re not alone!

Abortion Types

There are two types of abortion procedures: medical/chemical abortion and surgical abortion. The type of procedure women undergo depends on how far along they are in their pregnancy, health status, and ability to access emergency/follow-up care.

A surgical abortion is a medical procedure that ends your pregnancy. If a woman is more than 10 weeks into her pregnancy and is not eligible for the abortion pill, or in the event of a medication abortion failure, a surgical abortion may have to be performed.

Suction/Aspiration Abortion
This is the most common type of surgical abortion procedure and it can be performed up to 14 weeks LMP. During this procedure, a local anesthetic is given with possible IV sedation. The cervix is then stretched open with dilating rods. A suction catheter is inserted into the uterus to suction out the amniotic fluid and the baby. A curette (scraping instrument) may be used to scrape out any remaining fetal parts and placenta.

Dilation & Evacuation
This surgical abortion procedure is used from 15 weeks to 22 weeks, 6 days’ LMP, and a local anesthetic is given with possible IV sedation or general anesthesia. After viability (23 weeks and up) the procedure takes 2-3 days to complete and a local anesthetic given with possible IV sedation or general anesthesia is used. Our medical professionals will help you understand the entire procedure for both time frames.
The abortion pill is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks after your last menstrual period (LMP). It consists of two different medications that you take 24-48 hours apart. The first medication taken causes the death of the baby, and the second medication causes your uterus to contract so that the contents of the uterus are expelled. Before taking the abortion pill, it is very important for your health and safety to first have an ultrasound. There is no cost to you for ultrasounds at Corbella Clinic. We can confirm your pregnancy through an ultrasound to verify how far along you are, the location of your pregnancy (in the uterus vs. ectopic), and the viability of your pregnancy. Our medical team can answer your questions regarding the different abortion procedures so you can make a fully informed choice.
